Overview
A client approached Valen seeking a comprehensive solar power solution for a small, remote, off-grid radio site. With 80 sites planned for rollout, safety, reliability, and ease of installation were paramount. The system needed to operate autonomously while offering seamless remote monitoring and management.
The Challenge
The client required a solution that could power their radio communications equipment in a remote location without access to mains power. The system had to be highly reliable, low-maintenance, and capable of remote monitoring to minimise technician visits. Additionally, ease of installation was essential to streamline the rollout across all sites in the program.
The Solution
Valen engineered a complete solar power system tailored to the client’s requirements. The system was designed for safety, reliability, and ease of use, with each component chosen for durability and performance in remote conditions. The solution included:
- 415W of Solar Power: Solar panels installed with enclosure shading to maximise efficiency and protect against extreme weather conditions.
- 9600Wh of Valen ENLiFEN Lithium Battery Storage: The lithium batteries were mounted on a sturdy rack, providing long-lasting, high-capacity energy storage.
- 30A Victron Energy MPPT Solar Charge Controller: The MPPT controller was selected to suit both 12V and 24V DC systems, ensuring flexible power management.
- 65A Battery Protection: Added to safeguard the batteries and extend their operational lifespan.
- 2x Load MCBs: To protect critical loads, ensuring reliable power distribution.
- Heavy Duty Outdoor Field Cabinet: Constructed from 2-3mm heavy-duty steel, the cabinet featured three-point padlockable locks for secure, weatherproof protection of internal components.
- Remote Monitoring, Alarms, and Control: The system included cloud-based monitoring and Modbus TCP for real-time management. Optional SNMP or supervisor integration on the client’s server was available.
- 10+ Rack Units: Additional rack space was reserved for the client’s radio, monitoring, modem, and switch equipment.
- 8x 50mm Gland Access: The cabinet was equipped with multiple access points for cabling, simplifying installation.
- Full Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT): Valen performed thorough pre-installation testing to ensure the system was ready for deployment.
- Post-Sales Support: Ongoing support was provided to assist with system maintenance and troubleshooting.
The Benefits
Our client saw immediate advantages from Valen’s ModX1 system, particularly in its remote monitoring capabilities. From their Network Operations Centre (NOC), technicians were able to monitor and control all sites without the need for frequent site visits, reducing maintenance time and costs. The option for remote alarms and control allowed for faster response times in case of system issues, further ensuring reliable operation.
The inclusion of space for radio and network equipment within the cabinet streamlined the setup process and reduced clutter on site. The ModX1 unit, born from years of Valen’s expertise in remote, off-grid power applications, was built to withstand the harsh environments of remote sites while maintaining safety and performance standards.
Conclusion
The rollout of Valen’s ModX1 solar system across 80 remote sites marked a significant success for the client, ensuring reliable power for their radio equipment.
