Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to install a ModX2?
On-site electrical work is measured in hours rather than days. The system is factory integrated, pre-wired and tested before it leaves our facility, so there is no field integration to do. Installers have reported install-time savings of up to 70% against building an equivalent system from components.
A field-built equivalent typically occupies one or two licensed electrical workers for two to five days across mounting, wiring, controller configuration and troubleshooting.
The larger schedule item is usually not installation labour at all. It is structural certification, which runs 6 to 12 weeks and sits on the critical path before anyone can go to site. A pre-engineered platform removes that from the schedule, because the certification already exists.
Where site access is the constraint rather than labour, a possession window, a shutdown, a wet-season deadline, a compliance date, that schedule compression is generally the reason customers choose this platform over building their own.
Can a ModX2 be used for grid-connected solar or feed-in tariff export?
No. ModX2 is an off-grid platform. It powers an isolated load at a site with no grid connection. It is not designed for grid-connected operation or for exporting power under a feed-in tariff.
If your site is already connected to the grid and you want to reduce bills or export surplus, that is a grid-interactive solar installation—a different product category entirely.
If your site has an unreliable grid and you need to keep running when it fails, talk to us about Vantara. It can be configured as a hybrid: running on grid when it is there, switching seamlessly to battery and generator when it is not.
We spell this out because specifying off-grid equipment into a grid-connected application creates a compliance headache after installation. Worth getting the category right upfront.

The fastest way to get to the right answer is to bring three numbers to the first conversation: daily energy consumption in kWh, peak and surge load in kW, and how long the site needs to survive with no generation. Everything else follows from those.
Is a ModX2 made in Australia?
ModX2 is integrated, assembled and tested at Valen’s facility at Lawson, New South Wales, using componentry from established manufacturers. Valen Power is certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, and spares are held in Australia.
On a remote site four hours from a depot, Australian assembly buys you response time. A spare part dispatched locally instead of an import lead time. Support in your timezone. Warranty administration handled by the people who sold you the system, not routed offshore. And engineering support from the team that integrated the unit. That matters more than the flag on the paperwork.
Can a ModX2 be relocated or expanded later?
Yes to both, with different degrees of effort. Battery capacity scales from one to three modules within the existing enclosure, so a site whose load grows, an extra camera, a comms upgrade, additional telemetry, can be uprated without replacing the system. Additional solar arrays are available as an option where generation rather than storage is the constraint.
Relocation is straightforward mechanically: the unit is designed to be lifted with batteries in situ, so a move is a crane, a transport permit and a new slab rather than a decommissioning exercise. That is a meaningful consideration for temporary construction, exploration and monitoring campaigns where the asset outlives the site.
Where relocation is the primary requirement rather than an occasional one, V-Trail is the better platform. It is trailer-mounted and designed to be towed and redeployed repeatedly.
What maintenance does a remote solar power system need?
The maintenance regime for a ModX2 is built around minimising site visits rather than eliminating them:
|
Interval |
Activity |
|---|---|
|
Quarterly |
Visual inspection |
|
Six-monthly |
Electrical connections, battery health check, firmware currency |
|
Annually |
Solar panel cleaning, enclosure seals and filters, comprehensive service |
Two practical points matter more than the schedule itself. First, most of what a quarterly visual inspection used to catch is now visible remotely, generation trend, state-of-charge behaviour, alarm history and load drift all show up in the monitoring data, which lets you convert calendar-based visits into condition-based ones and cut the number of trips.
Second, keep the logbook. Where a warranty depends on evidence of correct operation, the service record and the monitoring log are the claim. Abnormal findings should be reported promptly, because a fault left running is a fault the warranty may not cover.

Premium Energy Management System
Empowering electricity networks through advanced energy management, Valen’s EMS is designed to optimise asset control, streamline network operations, and reduce environmental impact. By centralising comprehensive monitoring and providing seamless control across critical power assets, we enable network operators to minimise field visits, cut operational costs, and focus their teams on high-value tasks.
Control every site, every component from any location - effortlessly.
Valen provides an agnostic, all-encompassing remote monitoring and management platform to track, analyse and optimise your telecommunications sites’ performance. Single dashboard for all data points including batteries, temperature, door alarms etc. If you think it, we can monitor it from this dashboard.
Seamless integration
The main job of the Energy Management System is to make sure everything is working together and synchronised. Valen’s monitoring solution can take a variety of protocols and feed out a selected protocol. For example, it can feed in MODBUS RTU or MODBUS TCP and feed out DNP3. These decisions are discussed and defined during Valen’s design stage.
Supports FCAS
The Energy Management System (EMS) supports Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) by actively monitoring and managing the battery energy storage system. It can quickly respond to changes in grid frequency by charging or discharging the batteries to help maintain stability. This dynamic response helps the grid stay balanced and supports overall grid reliability.
Dynamic and adaptable
Valen’s Energy Management System (EMS) for its Battery Energy Storage System is very flexible and can easily adapt to changes. You can add new drivers or protocols if needed, and they can be quickly uploaded to the EMS, making it ready to go. The system has 34 input and output points, both digital and analogue, which allows it to handle a variety of tasks. Plus, it uses very little power, making it efficient to run.
Cyber-security
Cyber security is and should be at the forefront of community battery deployment. Valen’s Energy Management System (EMS) comes with agnostic integration to all components through a control and monitoring network. This enables a single login and control from one platform and can be tailored to requirements.

What it costs to maintain a SWER line, and why SAPS is often cheaper
Single wire earth return lines exist because extending three-phase to a few remote customers never stacked up. But the marginal SWER line is not free: it is inspections, vegetation management, fault response, bushfire risk and replacement of ageing conductor, often to serve a handful of connections. A stand-alone power system can remove the line while […]
