Enhancing Reliability and Sustainability: Transgrid’s Seamless Battery Bank Upgrade with Valen’s EnviroX-cel Technology 

Valen worked with Transgrid to design a critical battery bank swap-out solution at their Hammonds Hill Site.  

The project required the delivery and installation of new front terminal batteries, along with voltage, impedance, and discharge testing to ensure optimal performance. Valen also handled the safe removal and disposal of the old batteries, providing a seamless and efficient service. 

The Battery Bank 

The battery bank, supplied by Valen, featured 12 Volt, 155Ah Enviro X-Cel Batteries, utilising Lead Acid, AGM Battery Technology. The setup consisted of four strings with four batteries per string, resulting in a total capacity of 48V 620Ah. 

The Installation Process 

The installation process began with a visual assessment of the existing battery bank to identify any risks, followed by isolating the bank from mains power. Voltage testing was conducted on the existing batteries before removing them from the racks, using proper manual handling procedures. The racks were cleaned and prepared for the new batteries, which were then installed by two personnel. Battery links were fitted to create 48V strings, and voltage and impedance tests were conducted on the new batteries. A 90Ah discharge test was performed on each string for 60 minutes, with voltage and impedance checks at 15-minute intervals. Finally, ventilation tubing was installed to complete the setup.
