A front terminal battery is a lead-acid or lithium battery with both terminals on the front face of a long, shallow case rather than on the top. It is designed to be installed in a rack or cabinet and connected, torqued and maintained entirely from the front, without withdrawing the battery from its tray.

That single design change drives everything else about the format:

  • No overhead clearance is needed above each tray, so trays stack tightly, which maximises amp-hours per rack unit in a cabinet where space is the binding constraint.
  • The case is long and shallow, suiting the depth of telecommunications and DC power cabinets rather than the footprint of a floor-standing stand.
  • Maintenance happens at a normal working height and posture, no reaching over or behind a live battery bank, no working at height on upper tiers.
  • It fits standard rack widths, in both 19-inch (EIA) and 23-inch (ETSI/telecom) configurations.

The format originated in telecommunications, where cabinet depth and technician access dominate the design, and has since become standard in UPS, data centre, rail signalling and substation DC applications for the same reasons.
